Wind Energy As A Renewable Resource

Many people prefer the ease of connecting to the power company‘s grid than erecting a wind turbine. Despite this this, the gains from installing such a system will be seen in the first electric bill, or in the lack of said bill. A person can save and even earn money with the installation of such a system; however, it is the energy independence that many feel to be the most rewarding benefit. Imagine never worrying about an electric bill. Now, imagine receiving a check from the electric company. All this and all the modern conveniences that electricity supplies. It costs nothing to operate a wind turbine, but fuel costs and electric bills steadily grow more expensive. The expense of installing and setting up a turbine is falling steadily as demand rises and technology improves. Many people have other reasons for desiring to be energy independent. These reasons can be anything from political fears such as terrorist _strikes on oil fields and power grids, the desire to for a cleaner environment or the desire to live in a remote location without having to live without electricity and all it provides. Many states provide homeowners that remain on the grid but use wind energy or other forms of alternative energy rebates or tax breaks from their respective state governments. These rebates can cover as much as 50% of the total cost of a green energy system. Additionally, 35 states allow homeowners to sell any unused energy they produce to the local power company under what are known as net metering laws. These laws ensure that the individual gets paid standard retail rate for the energy they sell to the power company. Homeowners can actually profit from producing their own energy. It is becoming a battle between lawmakers and power companies. Federal lawmakers are trying to require tax breaks and other wind power incentives in all 50 states. Some countries, among these are Japan and Germany, already have national incentive programs. The power companies do not feel they need to pay retail rates to private individuals. The shortsightedness of the power companies is apparent when they seem more worried about short term profit loss than the benefits provided from the increased use of wind turbines or wind farms. Head of the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies of California V. John White points out, “It's quality power that strengthens the grid.”
