New Urbanism And Atlernative Energy
The light and heat produced by the sun is what we call solar energy. Having a limitless supply sunlight is also free. No pollution is caused through the use of solar energy. But there is still some impacts on the environment although indirect.Sunlight is converted into electricity through the use of photovoltaic cells. These cells are made of silicon and the manufacture of these cells does produce some waste material. If not properly managed, solar thermal farms can negatively impact the environment, particularly desert ecosystems. Many applications can benefit through the use of solar energy. Solar power, without doubt is a boon for the agriculture industry. Areas that have a short growing season, such as the mountains of South America, use greenhouses to convert some of the sun‘s energy into heat to provide the necessary temperature to grow crops. The first modern greenhouses were built in the 16th century, however, the Romans were the first to use such an idea.To maximize usage of the energy generated by the sun, daylight systems have been installed in many homes and businesses. Using daylight illumination as a replacement for artificial lighting can reduce the power bill for the home or business in a dramatic fashion. Among the choices of daylight systems are skylights, light tubes, light shelves and saw tooth roof systems. Proper installation and use of a daylight system can effectively reduce power bills by as much as 25%.Solar thermal technologies greatly enhance the abilities of solar power as these provide the means of space heating, space cooling and process heat generation. Water distillation, the process by which brackish or saline water is made potable, is also possible with solar energy.SODIS, or solar water disinfection, is a process in which polyethylene terephthalate bottles are filled with water and exposed to sunlight. This process takes a long time, requiring 6 hours to two days depending on weather conditions. At this time more than two million people in developing countries use SODIS as their primary manner of acquiring drinking water.Sunlight is converted to electricity through photovoltaic cells. To this point, photovoltaic cells have been mainly used to power small and medium-sized things like calculators powered by a single solar cell. Even so, more and more homes are being powered by photovoltaic cells. Solar energy is utilized by numerous methods. Using photovoltaic cells is the primary method of collecting solar energy. Solar energy is converted to electricity by photovoltaic cells.Solar furnaces use a vast array of mirrors to focus the Sun’s energy onto a small space to produce very high temperatures which are in turn used to boil water to create steam to drive turbines which generate electricity. This is a complex process, nonetheless Spain and several other countries are already successful in generating substantial amounts of electricity in this manner.Solar power does not function at night, despite all of its usefulness during the day. It may prove that vast arrays of batteries can store adequate amounts of the sun‘s energy during the day to power civilization at night. More likely, another form of renewable energy, such as wind power or OTEC, can fill the void. Whatever the case turns out to be, the reality is that mankind has numerous alternatives to petroleum.
